Top 10 literatuur in Amerika en Europa

De AKO-Literatuurprijs 2010 is gewonnen door David van Reybrouck voor zijn boek Congo. Niet verwonderlijk dat een Belgische schrijver dit als onderwerp kiest, want de Congo was lange tijd een Belgische kolonie, zeg maar gerust een soort blank uitplundergebied onder de evenaar. De andere mededingers naar het geldbedrag van 50.000 euro hadden het nakijken. Dit waren Kees van Beijnum met Een soort familie, Oscar van den Boogaard met Meer dan een minnaar, Tom Lanoye met Sprakeloos, Willem Jan Otten met Onze lieve vrouwe van de schemering en Koen Peeters schrijver van De bloemen. Goed geschreven boeken allemaal van vakkundige auteurs, maar toch voorbij gestreefd door Congo. Ja, een prijsuitreiking is nu eenmaal een wedstrijd in de ware betekenis van het woord. Of zoals Abba zingt: The winner takes it all, the loser is standing small.

Congo is geen roman, maar een geschiedkundig werk vol anekdotiek, wat het juist heel erg leesbaar en invoelbaar maakt. Misschien de doorbraak van een nieuw literair genre geent op de dekolonisatie. Hier in Nederland zou een boek over bijvoorbeeld Suriname, vol anekdotes en geschiedenis, kijk alleen maar eens naar de staatsgreep van Bouterse als inspiratiebron van mogelijk een Nederlandse David van Reybrouck. Voor menig romancier zonder inspiratie zeker het proberen waard.

De Codex Leicester is het kostbaarste boek ter wereld. Het werd in 1994 door Microsoft oprichter Bill Gates gekocht op een veiling voor het lieve prijsje van $30,8 miljoen.

Written between 1506 and 1510, the Codex Leicester provide the minds of great Renaissance artists, scientists, and thinkers, Leonardo da Vinci.
Codex is named by Thomas Coke, later first Earl of Leicester, purchased in 1717. Physically, the Codex takes the form of 18 sheets of paper, each folded in half and written on both sides, forming a complete 72-page document. It’s handwritten in Italian by the Leonardo, using a typical mirror writing, and supported by lots of pictures and diagrams.
Codex stored on public display once a year in different cities around the world. Year 2004 has been exhibited at the Château de Chambord, and in 2005 in Tokyo. One page is on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle in 2006 the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius.”

Dit miniscule in leer gebonden boek heeft de kunst van drukken en boekbinden naar een heel nieuwe dimensie van precisie getild.

Renowned German typographer Joshua Reichert especially created a colourful alphabet for this tiny ABC-picture book, exclusively produced in the traditional book city of Leipzig where the idea was originally born.
Measuring 2.4 x 2.9 mm and presented in a wooden box including a magnifying glass, this is the world’s smallest book in a published edition. “It was printed in the usual way, but all the machinery and tools had to be created in miniature first.” The book is published by Die Gestalten.
Printed in an edition of 300, Selfridges have the last available stock of the title and at £70 a snip for such a collectable item.

Het grootste boek ter wereld is de 350 jaar oude Klencke atlas. Het maakt onderdeel uit van een collectie oude atlassen in de British Library. De atlas is 1.75 m hoog en 1.90 m breed. Er zijn zes mensen voor nodig om de atlas op te tillen. Het werd ooit cadeau gegeven aan Charles II.
